Brilliant Noise

Late at Tate Britain, Friday 1st of August 2008, 6 -9 pm

Across two spaces, the students on the MA Critical Writing and Curatorial Practice Course at Chelsea College of Art and Design have curated a selection of video and film works that seeks to keep to the guiding energy of this edition of Late at Tate: music. We have sought to bring together works in which the sound is central to the logic of the moving image. In our selection we were less interested in the music video genre, in which visuals are usually constructed in order to support the music element, than works which are concerned with the holistic integration of the two.

Works that require a more contemplative mode of viewing in which the sound emerges from the recorded Mise-en-scène are presented in the intimate space of Manton Studio. The other films and videos on show in the North Duveen Gallery employ various different techniques and approaches to the idea of combining sound and the moving image; some for example are made from automated systems and others operate using a technique akin to the post-production process of sound-tracking.
